Warning signs

Signs your engine needs attention

Most engine failures give warning long before they become expensive. If you recognise any of these, book a diagnosis — catching it early is usually the difference between a repair and a rebuild.

  • Flashing engine lightUnburnt fuel is reaching the catalytic converter — stop driving.
  • Temperature gauge climbingOverheat once and you can warp a head; twice usually means skimming.
  • Knocking under loadA deep knock is bottom-end wear, and waiting costs the whole engine.
  • Smoke from the exhaustBlue is oil, white is coolant, black is running rich.
  • Oil topped up between servicesAn engine that drinks oil is wearing somewhere — worth finding early.
  • Rough idle or misfireCoils, plugs or injectors, though a sensor fault gives the same symptom.

FAQs

Engine repair questions

We charge a flat diagnostic fee, and if you go ahead with the repair it comes off the final bill. You get the scan report either way, so you are free to take it elsewhere. Call us for the current figure.

It depends on the damage and the car's value. As a rule, if the block and crank are sound we rebuild; if the block is cracked or the crank is beyond regrind, a replacement unit is usually cheaper. We give you both figures and let you decide.

No. Servicing and repair at an independent workshop does not void a manufacturer warranty, provided the work follows the specified schedule and uses parts of matching quality. We log everything in a digital service record so your history stays complete.

If it is steady and the car drives normally, short journeys are usually fine — but get it read soon. If it is flashing, stop and call us. A flashing light means raw fuel is reaching the catalytic converter, and that turns a cheap repair into an expensive one very quickly.

Diagnosis is the same day. Coils, plugs and most oil leaks are one to two days. Timing chains are one to two days, head gaskets two to four, and a full rebuild one to three weeks depending on machining and parts. We give you a date with the quote.

We fit the best aftermarket parts as standard — in most cases these are made by the same manufacturers that supply the car makers. Where a genuine part is the better choice, we say so and quote both. You always choose.

Work stops and we call you with photos, the cost, and what happens if it is left. Nothing extra gets done without your approval — we never carry out work you have not agreed to.

Get your engine looked at properly

Tell us the symptom and we will tell you what it is likely to be before you bring the car in. Diagnosis is the same day, and the quote is fixed.
